Captain Jessica Tyson has every good reason to celebrate.
She is Sedgemoor District Council’s Deputy Harbour Master (they have no less than three well qualified mariners on the payroll) and despite the fact that she has only been with the council for a few months, she has just been awarded the Merchant Navy’s medal for Meritorious Service.
This is somewhat special.
It recognises her achievements over a number of years. She is a fully qualified marine Pilot, a Navigator, Master and ship Surveyor. Only twenty such medals are awarded annually for “exemplary service, devotion to duty, rewarding those who have set an outstanding example to others”.
This special lady is now being recognised for her work advancing the careers of young people and promoting the cause of women at sea. Well done Captain! Keep up the good work.
