Economic Growth

This part of Somerset has shown remarkable resilience during the economic recession. It is a tribute to the people who live and work in the area that they have great skills and can demonstrate real adaptability in a crisis. But it is also due to the significant efforts made in attracting new business.

The economic development unit at Sedgemoor District council,  for example, has spearheaded negotiations with a number of important employers, some of them household names – in posh households!

I have been asked to assist in several of  these negotiations to help bring much needed new employment to the area. But by far and away the biggest project in living memory is EDF’s plan to construct Britain’s first new nuclear power station for a generation at Hinkley Point.  Hinkley carries a huge price tag and but offers a vast  array of benefits to the community and the nation as a whole. I have fought hard with others to secure the deal and I will go on fighting. The facts and figures ought to speak for themselves:
