The Government today unveiled plans to create 38 new Investment Zones” to encourage new industry. One them is likely to be just north of Bridgwater on a site already being developed under the title “Gravity”.
The 616-acre site, once a Royal Ordnance Factory. has the potential for a rail terminal and is ideally situated by Junction 23 of the M5 motorway. The total project could deliver up to 7,500 skilled jobs in the County.
Investment Zone status could offer businesses 100% rate relief and there may be other bonuses to help attract industry.
The site is big enough for a major “Gigafactory” which could, for example, be the base for the latest motor industry innovations.
There is still, however, a big “if”.
“I know that Council leaders are already in regular touch with Government on this huge opportunity for the whole of Somerset. I will continue to do everything I can to encourage colleagues in Whitehall to see the value of what we have to offer. Bridgwater has always championed innovation. Gravity is the latest golden opportunity. Fingers crossed that future high level talks bear fruit.”
