The Prime Minister has spelled out another set of very tight restrictions in the run up to Christmas. There is no sensible argument against the arithmetic provided by scientists. This virus is spreading. There is no simple way of stopping it except by avoiding human contact as much as possible. The cure, if there is a realistic cure, may come in the form of a vaccine that works. But such a prospect is not likely to become real for most of us until the Spring of next year at the earliest. It would be great to celebrate Christmas normally, but that depends on the success of what we all do next. Every time someone somewhere breaks the rules the whole project is at risk. We will either have each otter to thank or else to blame. No intelligent government can offer a guaranteed route out of the crisis. Everything depends on everybody exercising restraint and common sense. I sincerely urge all the people I represent to follow the guidance, obey the rules and help defeat this terrible disease.
