Somerset County Council wants to become a huge new Unitary Authority. The power-brokers of County Hall (or should I have said pawn-brokers?) believe that there will be great efficiencies to be gained. But they have not done the arithmetic. Truth is that scrapping five existing district councils will cost several arms, scores of legs and achieve absolutely nothing. Worse still, a unitary authority would be top heavy with bureacrats and out of touch with the people.
Somerset County Council can't even come up with a name for this nonsense.
But they will not be needing the old name if their madness gets the go-ahead.
So we auctioned it !
The Somerset County Council brand is, admittedly, somewhat tarnished. The current tenants at County Hall have presided over a profligate and unpopular regime. But surely someone, somewhere could provide a new loving home for a needy old friend. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase a little slice of heritage which would otherwise be destined for the dustbin.
Discerning bidders were relieved to know that the sale did NOT include any council buildings, bad debts, daft ideas or top management.
(And neither was the dream machine of many Council Chief Executives)
The final e-auction generated considerable interest and the proud new owner - Mr D M of Bridgwater - will be pleased to learn that his succesful offer for Somerset County Council will now be donated to a suitable local charity.
Thanks to all who participated.
