BUS FARES

The cost of getting to work is never a laughing matter. Somerset is a sprawling county with many miles between major towns. Public transport ought to be a vital necessity. But Somerset County Council axed almost £250,000 of subsidies last year. That put whole routes at risk and many fares had to rise. County Council budgets are, inevitably, always going to be under pressure. We were told at the time that the Council was making such cuts with "regret".

What we didn't then realise was that Somerset County Council is still operating a very generous travel discount system for its own staff. The full discount amounts to 19 per cent ! I am indebted to a member of the public for forwarding a copy of an e-mail from County Hall's Administrator. It proves there is one fare structure for them and another for the rest of us:

>Please note that the Staff Travel Group have agreed to continue to
>subsidise all monthly bus tickets purchased from the cashier on B1 by
10%,
>this applies on top of the 10% discount received from the bus company
and
>will therefore mean a 19% discount from full ticket prices. It is hoped

>that this will help to offset the new years increases in prices from
the
>bus company. This subsidy will be in place until the end of March 2007,

>when it will be reviewed.

>Thank you on behalf of the Facilities Management Group".
