What the Chief Executive said….

Silence ought to be golden for a council Chief Executive. As the most senior officer in a local authority anything said in public is likely to have repercussions unless very carefully phrased. So when the joint Chief Executive of Taunton Deane and West Somerset councils opened her mouth to the Municipal Journal it was unfortunate that she put both feet into it. She described West Somerset’s financial position as “unsustainable”. She suggested that if the current proposals to merge with Taunton was refused then Taunton would abandon West Somerset. This is not quite what West Somerset’s councillors expected of their top officer. Councillors were not consulted about what she had to say and would not have agreed to her words. Perhaps she might like to consider the fact that a substantial part of her very generous salary is met by West Somerset District Council.
