I was proud to attend the formal unveiling of Watchet’s War Memorial on Saturday. Many local people have worked very hard indeed so that the town can permanently honour 58 residents who lost their lives in two world wars. The design for the memorial was inspired by the sketches of a Watchet schoolgirl and the timing of the opening ceremony – 100 years to the day since the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the event that sparked the Great War – could not have been more apt. £18000 was raised to build this splendid tribute. Money well spent!
